A Nigerian man, Solomon Onyeka, has been sentenced to seven years in jail and a fine of 10 lakh (N15.6 million) for duping a woman in India.
He was sentenced after an Aligarh court found him guilty of fraud.
The victim, Adeeb Khan, had reported him at the Civil Lines police station in 2021. She said Onyeka had posed as a customs officer on a phone call to tell her a parcel she ordered from outside the country had arrived. She claimed he forced her to pay Rs. 3.84 lakh after he said actions would be taken against her if she did not send money for duty.
In its ruling, the court said Rs 5 lakh would be handed to Khan out of the Rs 10 lakh fine slammed on Onyeka.
The court urged Indians to be careful as different methods have been adopted to perpetrate internet fraud in the country.
