The company raising money for Brendan Nwabichie, a Nigerian student who lost his car to the riots in Middlesbrough, United Kingdom, has lamented hate and fraud accusations levelled against it after it raised £65,090 (₦133 million).

Clare Care’s Limited said it had received calls, emails and social media comments from the public alleging that it was pocketing over £62,000 (₦126.7 million) while handing Nwabichie only £3,000 (₦6.1 million) to replace his car.

The company said it had agreed with Nwabichie that he would receive £28,000 while the Cleveland Police would be given £10,000, churches and mosques who organised the post-riot cleanup were also agreed to get £10,000. It added that its other staff financially affected by the riots would get £1,000 and whatever was left would be sent to charities.

However, due to all the threats and fears for safety, the firm has now decided to hand control of the page to the Teesside University student so he can access all the money and spend it how he sees fit.

A spokesperson for Clare’s Care Ltd told TeessideLive: “We’re so upset and hurt at the constant hate comments on social media, as well as 100s of emails and phone calls. On the go fund me page it always said it was for Brendan as well as others impacted.

“We spoke with Brendan and asked what he would like with the money. We had initially agreed with Brendan that he would receive £28,000 which would get him his new car and insurance and help towards his rent and bills for the year and his school fees for the year, which he was happy with. There was a fake news posts published saying we were only giving him £3k and since then we have received so much hate – receiving hate for trying to help people out is ludicrous.”
