A report has said a Nigerian man, identified as Basil Lawrence Ilobi, has suffered a stroke in Kaliti Prison, Addis Ababa, Ethiopia, and left for dead.
Sahara Reporters said the Nigerian, said to be from Delta State, has been down with stroke for some time but has been left without medical attention and drugs.
It added that one Moses Sah Tiwachi, a Liberian, had died after falling ill due to malnourishment and other health conditions.
Sahara Reporters quoted one of the inmates as saying they were fed white rice without sauce all year round.
“One of our Nigerian brothers may die soon too as he has been abandoned by the Ethiopian government. He has been denied access to medical care. He has a stroke and his name is Lawrence,” one of the inmates told Sahara Reporters.
The source also alleged that Nigerian officials have demonstrated a disregard for the well-being of citizens imprisoned abroad, neglecting their welfare and failing to provide adequate support.
He alleged that there was no commitment on the part of the Nigerian government to facilitate their repatriation even when the Ethiopian authorities were willing to release the inmates.
The report added that two Nigerians, Chizoba Eze and Uchenna Nwanneneme, died in the prison in 2023.
