A 16-year-old boy in the United Kingdom has committed suicide after he was blackmailed with his nude photos by a suspected blackmailer reportedly operating from Nigeria.
Dinal De Alwis, originally from Sri Lanka, was said to have been asked to pay £100 (230,000) or risk his nude photos sent to his followers on Snapchat, a social media medium.

Distraught by the request, De Alwis, a resident of Sutton, South London, was said to have plunged to his death after recording a video of himself saying he was going to commit suicide. He slipped out of the house at 2am and recorded a brief video of himself walking down a street. His body was found after he had fallen to his death, which was caught on CCTV.
The blackmailer had reportedly sent the teenager two of his nude photos to prove he indeed had copies of them.
His father, Kaushallya De Alwis, told Daily Mail that his late son had messaged him and his wife to say he loved them before telling his two brothers to “look after mum and dad” on the day he took his own life.
But following dinner at home in October 2022 – just days after a family holiday in Majorca over the autumn half-term break – he uncharacteristically told his mother ‘just leave me alone’.
The deceased was an A student at Whitgift School, Croydon. After success in his GCSEs he had begun studying for the International Baccalaureate in sixth form and was top of the school in English and economics.

Kaushallya said he thought a girl may have taken the pictures while with the deceased and that they ended up in the wrong hands.
He said his son had told him he had girlfriends, raising suspicion one of them might have taken the photos before they ended up in the ‘Nigerian’ blackmailer’s possession.
