A 21-year-old Nigerian athlete in the United States, Favour Ashe, has been arrested by p0lice in Alabama, United States, over multiple counts of theft and fraud.
He was arrested at his home in Auburn on Tuesday, February 6.
The suspect represented Nigeria at the 2022 Commonwealth Games, where he won a bronze medal alongside three other Nigerians in the 4×100m relay. He recently transferred from the University of Tennessee to Auburn University, Alabama, which he has been representing in the National Collegiate Athletic Association.
Ashe has been charged with four counts of fraudulent use of a debit/credit card and two counts of theft of property, third degree.
“The arrest stems from Auburn Police receiving a theft report on Feb. 4, 2024. A victim reported that multiple items were stolen from a purse near the 100 block of West Magnolia Avenue. A credit card was among the items stolen, and the victim discovered several fraudulent charges were made using the stolen card.
“Favour Oghene Tejiri Ashe was developed as a suspect, and after further investigation arrest warrants were obtained. Ashe turned himself in to Auburn Police on Feb. 6, and he was arrested in obedience to the warrants.
“Ashe was transported to the Lee County Jail and held on a $9,000 bond,” a statement read.
