Police in Kenya have arrested two Nigerian men over the murder of 20-year-old Rita Waeni in Nairobi.
The victim was found decapitated and her remains dumped in refuse bags at a rental apartment on January 14, 2024.
The suspects, William Ovie Opia and Johnbull Asbor, have been arraigned. They were remanded and will be in custody until January 31.
The pair was arrested in Ndenderu, a town about 20 kilometres from Nairobi, near a dam where a head suspected to belong to Waeni was recovered.
Four Kenyans were also arrested in connection to the crime and another suspect who was travelling with a Mozambique passport.
Opia was said to have an expired Nigerian passport while Asbor had lost his two years ago.
Police said they recovered a butcher’s knife, a small axe and other items from the suspects’ apartment.
However, Opia told investigators he had bought the axe online for self defence.
Waeni’s family said those responsible demanded a ransom of 500,000 Kenyan shillings ($3,100; £2,400) to release Ms Waeni, even after she had died.
Human rights and feminist groups have planned countrywide demonstrations to protest against what they see as a surge in femicide and violence against women.
